Our laboratory has focused primarily on the anticancer activity of limonoids, highly oxidized triterpenes found in high concentrations in citrus. Twelve limonoids have been tested for antineoplastic activity. Four were active,
three demonstrated partial activity, and five were inactive. Several properties associated with the limonoid glucosides suggest that these chemicals might be used in the development of new commercial products.
Recent experiments in our laboratory have concentrated on the uptake, turnover, distribution, and metabolism of these phytochemicals in mammalian systems. We have also been studying the anticancer agents in coffee beans. The active agents have not yet been identified.
